Oracle X$TRACE, Wait Event Internals and Background Process Communication

01:48:41
In this session we will look into some internals of Oracle background process communication and also some special types of wait events that most people aren’t aware of. We will use some exotic tracing for internals research and fun and some of this stuff is actually useful in real life too! I’m not going to reveal everything upfront, as this is a secret internals hacking session after all ;-) We will use various techniques to research what the “reliable message” wait event is about and how reliable background process communication is orchestrated in Oracle. This is a hacking session, not formal structured training, so I’ll just do free form demos and talk (probably no slides, just hacking stuff on the command line). Also, check out my full-week Advanced Oracle Troubleshooting online training at https://blog.tanelpoder.com/seminar

How To Use The Oracle SQL Net Message To Your Advantage - Introduction

01:27
How To Use The SQL*Net Message From Client Event To Your Advantage - webinar introduction. Idle wait events are usually ignored in our performance analysis. It's because they diminish what we should be focus on... most of the time. We need master the "not most of the time" as well. So, in this webinar I'm going to focus on the idle wait event, SQL*Net message from client. I'll show you what this wait event is, why it's important and not important, and how to use it to our advantage in both a time-based analysis and an ASH based analysis. And of course, you'll be able to download and immediately use any tools that I use. Understanding And Resolving Oracle Free Buffer Wait Contention - Seminar Intro

06:19
This is the introduction to my video seminar, Understanding And Resolving Oracle Free Buffer Wait Contention. Free buffer waits is one of the most feared of all Oracle wait events. It requires just the right workload mix and configuration to appear. When it does appear, it affects the entire application. As Oracle DBAs, our job is to regain control of the situation and restore application performance. But it is complicated and making the wrong move can make the situation even worse! So, how do you quickly improve performance with a clear understanding of the situation? That's the focus of this seminar. This seminar is designed to take you on a journey. The journey starts with Craig clearly explaining what a free buffer wait is. Then he delves into Oracle's buffer cache, focusing on the least recently used (LRU) lists and the associated algorithms. Craig even role plays as an Oracle foreground process and an Oracle buffer header, locking the details into your brain. Now the details brought together making the cause and effect clear so the presented solutions make perfect sense! Taking it further, two solutions are implemented and the results analyzed. Join Oracle ACE Director Craig Shallahamer as he take you on an unforgettable journey into the Oracle buffer cache zeroing in on understanding and resolving Oracle free buffer waits. This seminar will lead you through the entire process turning you into a respected performance analyst. Your solutions will be spot-on and everyone will know it. When users call about a performance problem, you will know what to do, do it fast, and be able to explain the situation with clarity and confidence. For details to go http://www.orapub.com/video-seminar-tuning-oracle-using-an-awr-report PART ONE of this seminar builds your strong foundation. You will learn how an Oracle Time Based Analysis combined with OraPub's 3-Circle Analysis are used to methodically expose problems and develop solutions. You will understand the larger performance picture that escapes most DBAs. It is foundational and it sets you up for success! PART TWO of this seminar focuses on constructing a time based diagnostic framework, developing targeted tuning solutions fast, and turning this all into a compelling story. Your solutions will make sense and your analysis will be clear. Your peers and management will trust and respect your work. Do NOT watch this seminar if you are looking for training about all the AWR report sections or how to work through an AWR report from top to bottom desperately searching for problems and solutions. If this is you, then I recommend you purchase one of the many available AWR books and also my Oracle Performance Firefighting book. How an intense and diverse SQL statement workload can cause Oracle parsing problems

09:19
Make your library cache angry! This video is about how an intense and diverse SQL statement workload can cause Oracle parsing problems. There are many reasons for Oracle parsing related performance issues and many ways to identify them. So, I am narrowing the scope by focusing on one possible cause, that is, an intense and diverse SQL statement workload. I will use Oracle's wait interface to identify the root cause. Sound dry and boring? To make this a little more interesting and a whole lot more fun, I'm going to approach this from a non-traditional, almost backward perspective. After explaining some of the Oracle internals, I'm going to create a parsing intensive workload and then watch what happens... in real time. The educational impact is so powerful, I recorded a video This is video is part of Craig's blog post: http://blog.orapub.com/20170126/how-an-intense-and-diverse-sql-workload-causes-oracle-parsing-problems.html For more information go to www.orapub.com

Solving Performance Problems on Oracle DB

28:11
Solving Performance Problems on Oracle DB Matthew Vegh - Embarcadero Thursday, June 26, 2014 - 11am DBAs and database developers regularly spend a lot of time tracking down and resolving performance issues on the database servers they are responsible for; it can be very difficult, frustrating, and expensive. Given the complex interactions of applications, users and databases, new performance issues can arise almost as fast as old ones can be addressed. This session will simulate common performance problems on an Oracle server and then both identify those problems and provide effective solutions. Matthew Vegh is a Software Architect at Embarcadero Technologies for the Embarcadero DB Power Studio family of products and has been with the company for the better part of a decade. He has over 15 years of development experience with a wide range of technologies and a definite preference for database tooling.
