This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. The Business Model Canvas - 9 Steps to Creating a Successful Business Model - Startup Tips The Business Model Canvas, is a strategic management and entrepreneurial tool. It allows you to describe, design, challenge, invent, and pivot your business model. The Business Model Canvas is comprised of 9 key segments: The left hand section of the Business Model Canvas is the Infrastructure section and comprises three key areas: Key Activities: The most important activities in executing a company's value proposition. Key Resources: The resources that are necessary to create value for the customer. Partner Network: In order to optimize operations and reduce risks of a business model, organization usually cultivate buyer-supplier relationships so they can focus on their core activity. The middle section of the canvas describes the business offering and is the value proposition delivered to different customer segments. Value Propositions: The collection of products and services a business offers to meet the needs of its customers. According to Osterwalder, (2004), a company's value proposition is what distinguishes itself from its competitors. The value proposition provides value through various elements such as newness, performance, customization, "getting the job done", design, brand/status, price, cost reduction, risk reduction, accessibility, and convenience/usability. The value propositions may be: Quantitative – price and efficiency Qualitative – overall customer experience and outcome The right hand side of the Business Model Canvas describes the customers, the channels through which you deliver services and and the relationships you have with your customers. Customer Segments: To build an effective business model, a company must identify which customers it tries to serve. Various sets of customers can be segmented based on the different needs and attributes to ensure appropriate implementation of corporate strategy meets the characteristics of selected group of clients. Channels: A company can deliver its value proposition to its targeted customers through different channels. Effective channels will distribute a company’s value proposition in ways that are fast, efficient and cost effective. An organization can reach its clients either through its own channels (store front), partner channels (major distributors), or a combination of both. Customer Relationships: To ensure the survival and success of any businesses, companies must identify the type of relationship they want to create with their customer segments. The bottom section of the canvas describes the finances. Cost Structure: This describes the most important monetary consequences while operating under different business models. A company's DOC. Units sold, sale price etc. This is where the iPhone has been dominant and it’s the reason Apple has developed into the world’s most valuable company. We’re also not talking about sales from last month or last year, the title is meant to address all-time figures. Equally important is the type of good sold. We have consumables and durable goods - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durable_good. The iPhone falls into the category of durable goods. A hard good that yields utility of time, you do not eat your iPhone (or at least you shouldn’t). Examples of consumables include Coca-Cola, Kleenex, Big Mac etc. Because consumables are meant to be “consumed” one is encouraged to purchase multiples of the same product over time. Even with the more consistent consumption of popular beverages revenue figures for companies like Coca-Cola are not currently competitive with the revenue figures of Apple. This of course is a reflection of the average price per transaction. Lastly, we have commodities (oil, coffee, copper etc.). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodity These are not unique “products” in the same sense as a smartphone or game console from a specific manufacturer. Here is a list of popular items from various categories. The billion number listed above is a cumulative figure over the lifespan of iPhone as a product (iPhone, iPhone 3, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and so on). In fact, it’s Nokia who dominates the top of sales charts for specific models. Here’s the Wikipedia page for best selling phones ever - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_mobile_phones Even though Nokia dominated this list in volume we are once again met with lower per transaction revenue when compared to iPhone. Android is of course very popular. The most popular Android devices being made by the likes of Samsung and their Galaxy series phones. The top selling Galaxy device of all-time is the S4 which has sold roughly 80 million units. That said, Android in and of itself is not a consumer product you purchase independently. Instead it’s bundled with hardware purchases. Android is licensed to the manufacturer. Of course if Android itself was a “product” it’s overall sales numbers would be incredible but on it’s own it does not represent a durable product as referenced above. Of note, Apple is no longer top dog when it comes to global phone shipments currently. They did however have a huge head start which has them ahead on cumulative figures. Samsung currently owns the top spot for global shipments followed by Huawei who recently passed Apple. If the smartphone market continues in the direction it’s going (and I believe it will) Apple is unlikely to recover the unit shipment volume dominance it once had. Lastly, I currently use a Galaxy S8 as my daily driver device. This video is not meant to prop up Apple, it’s meant to bring light to the amazing scale of the segment we’re all so intimately invested in. Elon Musk: How to Start a Business! Seriously Take Notes! Did you know Tesla has a zero dollar marketing budget? It’s true. Despite operating in the emerging alternate energy car market (and rampant skepticism that electric cars could even compete), Tesla had an incredibly successful IPO in 2010 and continues to struggle to produce cars fast enough to meet demand. It seems amazing that they’ve been able to pull that off without marketing, but Elon Musk’s explanation for their success is simple: a relentless focus on making the highest-quality cars possible. The vast majority of Tesla’s budget (and about 70% of Musk’s time and energy as CEO) is devoted to research and development. Musk only spends 2 to 3% of his time talking to the press, with plans to cut it down to 1% so he can free up time for – you guessed it! – more focus on engineering and design. Marketing done right can be extremely powerful; I’m not saying it has no place in your business model. The vast majority of us don’t have Elon Musk-level capital to fund our businesses and get them off the ground. But if it comes down to a choice between more marketing for a mediocre product, or money money spent improving product quality, I’d choose quality every time. Here are FIVE things that I learned along the way: 1: Launch before you’re ready ----- Are you the kind of person that hears "Done Is Better Than Perfect" or “Shipping beats perfection” and thinks: “Really Are you sure ” If so, you’re in good company. “Hello. My name is Gary. I’m perfectionist.” October was hell for me. My task was take existing material and to repurpose it into a mini-course. That doesn’t sound like a recipe for torment. But the more I worked on the course, the less I liked it. I wanted to rip it up and start again. If this sounds like you, then take a note from Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn "If You're Not Embarrassed By The First Version Of Your Product, You’ve Launched Too Late" So pick and date. And launch. Before you’re ready. Bonus Tip: Set things up so that the date can’t be moved. I wrote the launch into an episode of Development that Pays. At that point, I was committed! 2: Remember that there are more moving parts than you think. ---- Your focus will the on the product. That’s only natural. But a product won’t launch itself. You’re going to need plumbing. I had my three videos. I also had an email service capable of sending time-delayed emails. Three videos. Three emails. Simples. But it’s probably not a great idea to send people direct to the video: each should be on its own page... And I’m going to need a form - so that people can sign up... And the form is going to need page to “live on”... And…. I think you get the message :) 3: Launch to a limited audience ---- Although it’s important to launch before you’re ready, you don’t have to be damn fool about it; not everyone has to see your “warts and all” version. So launch… but make it a soft launch. Wikipedia defines a soft launch as “a preview release of a product or service to a limited audience prior to the general public”. In the case of the “Scrum vs Kanban the Mini Course”, I “hid” the announcement in a “regular” Development That Pays episode: only people that watched one particular episode all the way to the 4 and half minute mark got the link. 4 - Be ready to make running repairs ----- Launch day rolls around. You push the Big Green Button, and breath a sigh of relief. But don’t relax too much! To paraphrase Mickey Rouke’s character in Body Heat: “You got fifty ways you're gonna * up. If you think of twenty-five of them, then you're a genius... and you ain't no genius.” Well you may be you are a genius. I am not. A genius would not have…. wasn’t expecting to told that one of my videos had TWO audio tracks. - A genius would not have I wasn’t expecting requests for the second lesson on day one. So expect things to go wrong… and be at the ready to make running repairs. 5 - Remember that it’s an experiment ---- It bares repeating: Remember that it’s an Experiment*. This one cuts two ways: It’s a reminder not to over-egg the pudding. This is a Minimum Viable Product, not a Final Perfect Product. It’s also a reminder to measure. Your Minimum Viable Product is part of the Build Measure Learn loop. And if you don’t measure, you won’t learn. But here's the other thing I'd say, this is more of the, you know, more of the hard truth behind it. Which is you've got to be willing to get out there, you gotta give some punches, you've got to take some punches, you gotta get into the ring. One of the things that I've discovered along the way is that the inventions that really make it, the products that truly succeed, they succeed because the person behind them is willing to get out there and hawk it and try, and learn, and evolve, and, you know, take their punches and push for it when they have to. So if you're willing to get out there and get in the ring and do that every single day, you have a much higher chance of having a product that succeeds. There are three key knowledge requirements for successful selling: know your product, know your audience, and know yourself. Let’s talk for a minute about knowing your product. As competitive markets push many organizations to increase their product offerings, the task of frontline salespeople to sell these products becomes more and more complicated. As a result, more and more salespeople are attempting to sell products they don’t really know. Yes, they can rattle off lists of features or attributes and canned scripts regarding the advantages of their products over those of the competition, but they haven’t really learned the intricacies of their products. To avoid this dilemma, you need to spend time with your product. If it’s a physical product, examine it from multiple angles, touch it, hold it, use it (preferably under a variety of conditions). Understand how it’s manufactured or assembled. Learn the history of its development. If possible, visit with people involved in the production process. If it’s a service, watch it in action. Learn the various steps and processes and the reasons why they exist. Speak with your service providers and understand their views of the service and what they do to achieve customer satisfaction.
