PETERHEAD, SCOTLAND — Scotland's notoriously strong winds could pan out to be a blessing in disguise after the Scottish government recently approved plans for a floating wind farm right off of the Scottish coast. According to the Guardian, Statoil, a Norwegian energy company, plans to build a floating wind farm 15 miles off the coast of Peterhead, Scotland by the end of 2017. The floating wind farm, called the Hywind floating wind farm, will consist of five, 258-meter-high floating wind turbines. Each will have a floating steel tube filled with ballast as their base and they will be tethered to the seafloor by three moorings. Each of the five wind turbines will have a six-megawatt capacity, and together they will be able to power an estimated 20,000 homes. Because they're not actually attached to the seabed, these types of wind turbines are cheaper than traditional ocean turbines and can be placed in deeper waters. Existing offshore wind turbines, which need to stand on concrete or steel foundations, are expensive if anchored to depths greater than 40 meters, reported the Guardian. Statoil's goal with this $232 million pilot project is to demonstrate a way to harness wind power that can increase the global market potential for turbines. Clean energy: New Japanese turbines generate electricity from sea waves - TomoNews

OKINAWA, JAPAN — Japanese researchers have come with special technology that can not only capture energy from waves, but also help protect coastlines. According to the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, a team led by Professor Tsumoru Shintake plans to set up energy-harvesting turbines near tetrapods, which are concrete structures placed along the shore to weaken the force of incoming waves and prevent erosion. The turbine has five flexible blades modelled after dolphin fins. It's supported by a stem that's anchored to the sea floor with mooring cables, which, like the blades, is flexible and can bend under pressure. Inside the turbine head is a magnet electric generator, which transforms wave energy into electricity. The electricity is sent back to the shore via cables, to feed into the grid. Using turbines on just 1% of Japan's coastline can generate roughly 10 gigawatts of energy, equivalent to about 10 nuclear power plants. Apart from tetrapods, the turbines can also harness electricity near coral reefs. They're built to be safe for marine life, with blade speed carefully calibrated so that any animals caught in them can escape unharmed. Fires are a problem for the industry, impacting on energy production, economic output and emitting toxic fumes, this could cast a shadow over the industry’s green credentials. Wind turbines catch fire because highly flammable materials such as hydraulic oil and plastics are in close proximity to machinery and electrical wires. TOKYO — A Japanese engineer has designed a new type of wind turbine that he believes would be able to harness power from typhoons. Atsushi Shimizu founded a tech company called Challenergy in 2013 and invented a wind turbine that not only can draw power from the force of wind, but can stay functional during typhoons. The typhoon turbine consists of three vertical blades and a central rod. It has an omnidirectional axis so that it can respond to wind coming from every direction. Instead of driven by a propeller, the turbine makes use of the principle of the Magnus effect: air curves when passing by a rotating object, and the downward deflection of the air-flow produces a lifting force that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the object to remain airborne. The blades are controlled by the central rod, which can be tightened to slow down, or stop the blades regardless of the external forces. Under normal circumstances, the typhoon turbine can achieve about 30 percent efficiency while conventional wind turbine can achieve 40 percent, ScienceAlert reported. However, conventional wind turbines could be damaged by typhoons while the typhoon turbine would be able to function normally. "Japan actually has a lot more wind power than it does solar power, it's just not utilized," Shimizu told CNN. "Japan has the potential to be a super power of wind.” According to the Japan Guide, about seven or eight typhoons pass over Okinawa prefecture each year, with about three hitting its main islands. November 8, 2015 Sea conditions prohibited transfer to and from turbine by vessel so helicopter was used to access turbine for maintenance. Wind speeds during transfer varied between 15 - 20 m/s (33 - 45 mph). For normal transfer vessels, the trip to the wind farm from the port of Grimsby is 2 hours. Flight time to site by helicopter from Humberside Airport is around 12 minutes. Training requirements for helicopter transfer include, HUET (Helicopter Underwater Evacuation Training), Tower Rescue Up, and Helicopter Hoist Operator training.

STANFORD, CALIFORNIA — The entire world could be powered by one deep-sea wind farm stretching across the Atlantic, a new study finds. Building an installation the size of India would could meet the whole world's power needs, according to a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Doctors Anna Possner and Ken Caldeira from the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University pointed out wind speeds over the ocean are on average 70 percent higher than over land, the Independent reported. Land-based wind farms have an upper threshold in the amount of energy that can be converted into electricity due to the combined drag of the spinning blades. Other studies have found land-based farms to have a limit of about 1.5 watts per square meter. Possner and Caldeira say it would be possible to produce 6 watts per square meter in the North Atlantic. Power output would be seasonal, with levels dropping to a fifth of the yearly average during the summer time. Several engineering challenges would have to be overcome. A deep-sea wind farm would have to operate in remote and harsh conditions where waves frequently exceed three meters (9.8 ft), according to the researchers. All in place. All the 67 turbines on Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm off Norfolk are now installed and they are all producing power. In October the testing of the last turbines will be done and they be handed over to operations. The full farm can power as many as 410,000 UK homes. The towers, nacelles and blades have been shipped from Denmark to the new Siemens pre-assembly and load out site in Hull, UK where the Dudgeon project was first user. The towers have also been assembled here. Since January the installation vessel Sea Challenger has arrived Hull 17 times to pick up turbine sets for installation offshore. As such the project was instrumental to the establishment of the construction site. Now the project is nearing the finish line and more than 40 percent of value creation in the project comes from local suppliers. In the operation phase Dudgeon will create 70 UK jobs – for many, many years to come…

Even when more advanced and much cleaner methods were developed over half-century ago, they were until recently unable compete on cost at least in short term, whatever due high initial construction cost for nuclear power plants, or due to fact that health issues associated with dirty fuels are often like in case of smoking in moderate amounts clearly obvious only after years or even a decades of exposure or after increasing quantity... This makes especially renewables like solar or wind until recently mostly useful in small scale projects for further development or creating a good public image. But years and millions spend on R&D starts paying off as we reached the point where clean energy sources becoming more affordable than our dirty heritage. This together with the development of large-scale power storage facilities greatly increasing the feasibility of both wind and solar as lack of wind or sun will not require keeping old power plants in full numbers on emergency status to prevent blackouts. While wind energy saw rapid growth in deployment during the last decade on land and in the shallow sea, deep water areas (depth 150m or more) where wind turbine can due lack of obstructions on long distances generate power in profitable quantities easier was until recently mostly limited to small-scale research projects trying to solve challenges behind assembly and installation. Statoil company with focus on extracting oil and gas was among those who foreseen potential future markets and invested in what become while not first floating turbine (that title goes to Blue H Technologies with somewhat complicated 80kW floating turbine design deployed in 2008) it was first large (2,3MW) deep water wind turbine operating from 2009 in the North Sea to prove the feasibility of the concept and help polish design into a commercially viable solution.
