How To Anchor a Mega-Ship | Anchoring & Equipment Explained! | Life at Sea

10739 ratings | 929049 views
In which I show you how anchoring is done on mega-ships with the use of windlass or simply by gravity. A detail breakdown of the components that make up the windlass. Brief explanation of scopes and catenary, anchor watches and anchor circle. Anchoring can be very dangerous if not done properly because it often involves massive amount of weight up more than 90,000kg in just the anchor alone without the chains. These video are not sponsored or ad-campaigned. Not intended for educational purposes (some information may be incorrect, I am producing these video solo with my limited knowledge). It takes some serious braking power to stop that free falling weight. Overheating is over probable. Have you ever first hand withnessed ripping out the bitter end ?

How often do anchor chains get replaced? Seems like they take a massive beating when they drop.
CodyBoyy (1 month ago)
y is the the chain not tided down at the end cause ive seen videos where it get away from the crew and just unrows tell its gone and they loose the it is it so that can drop it in a emergency instead of waiting for it to rill back in

So how can a ship lose its anchor and why would they let that happen and does it just sit then at the bottom?
sive1231 (1 month ago)
You need to do way more videos!!!!!!
Darklord Ky (1 month ago)
Learn something new everyday. I always figured you just drop the anchor in the water and let it dig. Didnt realize there was math involved...

How Not to Sail a Boat (2 months ago)
Whoa game changer when it is a megaship like these. We travel the world on our sailboat and in a couple weeks are posting our video about the time that we had to ABANDON the boat anchor! Sailing has been a huge learning curve so far as we start our journey around the world and videos like this are a great help!

Wait. Why do you have what looks to be an Iowa Class Battleship as a thumbnail for a video on a commercial freighter anchoring (besides the fact that you showed the USS Missouri {an Iowa Class} in the intro)?

Glad I found your channel. Well done. Also, anchor systems on large ships seem designed to do two things: anchor ships and occasionally maim or kill sailors.

Hi what does the 5 and 7 stands for ? Are they measured in metres or in shackles ?
Riley Scott (7 months ago)
On the one hand, I think you've done a good job with your motion-aware text captioning, but on the other hand there were parts where it detracted from my ability to watch the video.
Coleen West (7 months ago)
Actually, on my 55,000lb sailboat, the anchor "holds" the boat. The 300lb chain could not hold anything.

Great video. I didn't know the weight of the chain is what retains the ship when at anchor. How heavy is the anchor chain and what is the total length you have on board ship?

catothewiser (8 months ago)
What kind/grade of iron/steel is used for the anchor chain? It has to be pretty durable - not necessarily hard perhaps? And it is exposed to sea water a lot and then dried. Corrosion resistance must be a factor.

Nice videos! I’m writing a book and my main character is a shipper. Do you know why the ports in Savannah don’t anchor? One of my chapters discusses delays in shipping and how LB and LA ports hold ships in anchorage for days/weeks..,Savannah doesn’t seem to have this issue tho. Please help! Thx man

if these chains snap, anyone near the free swinging chain will be smash to pieces instantly

Yo dawg, I heard you like retention pins, so we put a retention pin in your retention pin so you can retain a pin that retains your chains.

“How to anchor a mega ship” *shows USS Texas in thumbnail*
rla1000 (8 months ago)
Is the scene at 0:27 really what happens?  It shows a warship of some type - no small ship -  apparently just dropped anchor, and the anchor sets, and ship is whipped around somewhat violently.  It seems plausible with a significantly smaller craft that that is what happens, for example, in a fairly strong current.  Anyone who knows, can you answer?  Thanks.

But why would you anchor? Why not just continue to your destination?
