Magic: The Gathering - Inside the World's Most Played Trading Card Game

26551 ratings | 2896374 views
Wizards, demons and goblins collide in the world’s first trading card game Magic: The Gathering, affectionately dubbed “cardboard crack” by its 10+ million diehard obsessives. From dank, wood-paneled basements to international big money pro tournaments, Magic continues to flourish since its phenomenal debut in 1993. VICE follows a professional Magic player who dropped out of college for a shot to be number one on the pro circuit, while two brothers wax nostalgic about the spells of old. Wow it's almost like Vice can be a decent news source when they don't send edgelords into the field who try to play up everything happening around them and act like it's all so crazy.
Bob Lam (9 days ago)
lol the dude that said the game is so well polished and so well done......... yeah i love mtg to bits but it honestly isn't always exactly polished.... like rn theres a card called nexus of fate that is just completely and utterly broken.......
Kyle Ashmore (9 days ago)

I havent played these kind of card games , but most of my friends keep YAPPING about Yu-Gi-Oh . My question is which one is better ; this one or YGH ?
With Donkey (7 days ago)
As someone who plays both, it's really a matter of opinion. YGH is a bit more fast paced, but MTG is a bit more customizable (many different types of viable decks to choose from). Yet MTG is way more expensive. I would just watch a video for each and choose one. Or find some friends who play one, and join in that game.

Funny how no one ever made a magic movie

Chess is the best game ever made. You can play it with rocks and lines yet have thousands of possibilities to play from opening to end game.

I love seeing people playing without sleeves. The Italian brothers had some unsleeved, unboxed moxon in their deck box. For some it's about the love and tradition behind the history of the game. Not the payout or the greed. I understand valuing cards, I'm not idiot, but it's nice to see people that think "what's the point of having a play card if you dont play it". That's heart.
Tres Dollaz (29 days ago)
This is dope!!! you should do one for Yugioh
RestlessGuy232 (30 days ago)
No way they threw a mox sapphire in a box. This is literally the money shot. ( 8:15 )

Do a video on Games Workshop and the thousands of dollars people are willing to pay for their models, and their community as a whole. The effort and creativity people put into that hobby is way more interesting then any card game. Plus it's not a super popular game so people would be exposed to it for the first time.

If you like MtG, you'll LOVE this new strategy-rap card game on hop culture and entrepreneurship. Legend of the Cipher: the Game of Hip Hop www.legendofthecipher.com/gallery After all, MtG won't make you a Planeswalker, but LOC will make you a real emcee. Ask me anything.

No big deal. Just a Sapphire chilling in that middle of that box... XD His cards so he can do whatever he wants.... 8:16

Just getting back into MTG. Now that Iam older and never owned a video game console after the PS2, I have an old nostalgia itch from my past. However brief it was. Antiquities, Unlimited, revised (only when Unlimited cards in NM aren't available) Alliances, and all 3 URZA's blocks are what I've been fondest of. Old cards. I wasn't around at the beginning. I quit MTG in 2000 after only playing in 6th grade bc i was too young to appreciate or really just understand the game. Plus, it was cooler to be a "skater boy" (shout out Avril Lavign) I only had like 2 friends that played it. I just turned 30 on the 21st - Mayan doomsday date ; ) I've bought strictly reserve list singles from Card Kingdom, only in NM condition (I want a complete Antiquities and Urza's block's Reserve List Set. Also been buying booster packs of Alliance's and URZA's block from only established sellers on ebay. Ive been on ebay for over a decade, so quite attune on how to choose the right sellers. So far, every pack passes the eye test after a good WIGGLE AND TIGGLE. YES , I SAID WIGGLE AND TIGGLE.... Thanks for the term Rudy of Alpha Investments ; ) If they were repacked all this time when I go to sell them in 20+ years, so be it. I got them lying flat in Ziploc bags and stored in a cool dark place. And my binders hanging so the pages dont get pinched. People want the sealed product. LONG LIVE THE RESERVE LIST!! and S.W.A.G: Silver, Wine, Art, Gold... not a wine drinker but its about tangible wealth.... cardboard canvas's (MTG cards are ART)... and a little thing called: blockchain. Large part of why 5G is being ushered in. Giggity!

The ending was some of the best shit. The fact that these grown men from Long Island play the game with just as much passion as kids, and then the kids who are just now getting introduced to such a good fucking game that's more alive today than ever before. Long live MTG.
Risque (2 months ago)
So cute to see those kids getting into a game that'll probably bankrupt their parents lol. Though tbh, good luck to them!

People would steal whatever he had in his binder and if they know him or recognize him and can mug him or follow him home to steal from his house. It would be the same as winning the lottery, you don’t want anyone to know you won because you can get robbed because someone recognized you on tv.

Who else likes the old cards the best
No Fun Intended (2 months ago)
Guys come on. The vintage cards shown here are most likely proxies. Though admittedly I wouldn’t put it past vice to be a bunch of idiots and damage some precious antiques for a video.

I've gone to four different Magic the gathering clubs in the past 6 years, in attempt to casually get back into this game, each visit was however the exact same regardless where I went. My deck versions was different then the others there, or if we could play it wasn't the strongest deck they owned, so they didn't want to play me. My goal was to casually go up to 10 people over the night and ask to play, and after that I would go home, I still have yet to play a game with someone, which to me feels insane. My time spent at the clubs besides asking people to play was merely observing, There is usually one single girl in the entire club, which generates a circle of guys around her, in one club I witnessed a girl who would just look at cards she thought were pretty, and the guys would just give her the card. The people playing the game were really into it, the competition seemed fierce, so much so that the losses often got heated and someone usually always storms out. The most normal thing was the few people just talking about the game lore or about rare cards. Could not find my place, and as much as it is entertaining to watch the drama sometimes, it tends to be the awkward people in high school who played Magic that just grew up but the social skills didn't quite make the leap, I say this having played magic in middle school. Still on the fence on trying a fifth time.

@10:30 wait, why was Kenny Powers proselytizing against Magic in the 90s?
Joe Coo (3 months ago)
Intriguing Haven't played M.T.G in twenty years picked up some packs today and be great to pick up the game again. Its a shame I don't have my old Green White damn thing went walk about years ago. Thinking of playing a number of different options. Not spending fortune though just gonna pick up boosters again. Playing a few friends Fair play to anyone taking it pro. That's pretty damn cool.
Danny Cartagena (3 months ago)
Please...do one with "Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards" Please!! I will die happy if that happens??
Jonny Croxville (3 months ago)
When "pros" pull a Yugi and get just what they need right when they need it...9 times out of 10 they cheated to do it. Because people forget about being fair when money is on the line. Totally ruins the game.
Microphunktv (3 months ago)
adderall.. so basicly magic tournaments allow consumption of dextroamphetamines? even e-sports in 2004 didnt allow that... and some latvian team got banned when i was playing counter-strike in baltic regional finals... :P just saying, magic is in the same category as e-sports.. pseudosports by now.. Im pretty sure Poker players aren't alllowed performance enhancing drugs as well... I guess unless you have dr prescription that you actually need adderall or smt like that... adhd is a made-up condition tho...
Thorin Peterson (3 months ago)
Players that dont talk during the match suck the fun out of the game for me. I'm not a fan of the dude they chose to follow around for this documentary, just puts me off. Fantastic doc though.

Jesus, they were playing with alpha and beta cards without sleeves. That's hundreds of dollars in damaged cards.
