This is a first!!! After months and months of filming my life as an interior designer and entrepreneur, my clients are finally starting to expect to see a camera person with me everywhere I go!..and...I LOVE IT! Having our clients allow me to film our meetings means more opportunity for you guys to see even more of what I do and hopefully learn from! I really hope to let you guys in on EVERY aspect of my work life because I know it isn't easy deciding whether or not to become an entrepreneur, or take the plunge to enroll in design school and I figure the more insight you can get to help make that decision the better!! I hope you enjoy this one! xK Subscribe to my channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHNK-JM63_vb2CJc1wC4p8g?sub_confirmation=1 Watch more of my business videos here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPXNut11Owo&list=PLM725hE3_9b_qdOTZm5IpEqkDHEiUycY7 — Karin Bohn is the founder and creative director behind the award-wining Vancouver-based design firm, House of Bohn (www.houseofbohn.com). Hey there Karin! I love your videos and your job! I know this video is from a year ago, but I hope you see my comment! I'm an architect in Brazil and I'm looking forward to immigrating to Canada on the next year. At least I'll try, haha. If everything goes well with my Express Entry, I'll arrive there as a PR already, but I won't be able to study, I'll have to look for jobs with my Brazilian degree and experience/portfolio only. In Brazil we kinda "mix" things a little, I mean, an architect does a lot of interior design work in his career, so I could get a good experience and portfolio on it too (www.lucasandrade.com.br). With these conditions, how hard do you think it will be for me to get a job? Do you think they are used to accept this type of professional on architrcture/interior design offices? And also, if possible, how much do you think it's possible to earn (aprox.) in this start? I know architecture and interior design are regulated professions, which I won't be able to do at first. But I mean jobs like "design assistant", "project designer", "architectural designer" or anything like these (please let me know if there are any most common job titles in this situation). Sorry about this long long comment, and thank you in advance!

Fabulous!!! Love your presence on camera. :D It's always such a stressful time during the build up to a client meeting.....love that feeling of confidence of walking out after a successful presentation. And also the glass of wine or 2 afterwards. ;)

This REAL presentation video inspired me in a way that the speaking skill is one of the key skills for interior designers to have. Also as an interior designer, I honestly don’t have much opportunity to do a full design presentation in front of clients since my boss and project manager do the most. I am mostly the drafter with some technical information to support the presentation. Unfortunately, I am not a native English speaker so my team wouldn’t fully trust me to run the presentation on my own. However, I really feel motivated by this video to step out of my comfort zone to overcome my language difficulty to become a great interior designer.

Hello Karin Many thanks for sharing such a valuable experience and giving us an insight into how things work . However, I have one comment to make: looking at the floorplan you were representing doesnt give enough information about what you planning to alter of the existing space/unbuilt rather than showing the location of the kitchen in the middle of the floor! Wouldn't be better showing the floorplan along a presentation like a spider's web with images accompanying the floorplan at the side describing the possibility of what might be? The images you showed at the beginning seemed difficult to remember later on as I believe you showed them early instead of displaying them after floorplan representation Its my personal opinion again , thank you for sharing the video with us
Kat Kristar (1 month ago)
I agree with you Mo Abidal. I also think this video has been edited (due to time limitations) and leaves a lot of things out. For instance, it's a 14,000 sf office, but we have no idea if this is the entire company or a subdivision of it. The client's design review committee seems rather large (appears to be at least 10 people) for an office of that size, so I'm guessing that the client's committee isn't composed of design experts, but instead heads, managers and supervisors of that office. (In other words, the clients would need as many illustrations and renderings to visualize it as possible.) If you look at 6:39, 6:40 on the video you will see the "spider's web" that you mentioned that appears to have been given to each of the client's committee members as a handout. I still think that maybe they ought to have been given more visuals. There are computer programs out there which can provide walk-throughs as well, but we don't know if that was used here.

Hi Karin, thank you for being our motivation to reach our professional goals in life, i am a graduate Architect living in Canada and i would to start working more in Interior Design projects either residential or comercial as a CAD technologist. Do you believe that with my 4 years as a Architectural Technologist would i be ablle to find a job as a interior technologist and be succesful on it. Is it pretty similar what you guys do in CAD for interiors. Like what kind of documents do you guys do as part of your construction documents or development permits packages... Thank you so much!!!!! Gracias

Stumbled upon your videos while I was looking for interior design videos to try to get myself motivated, I just started the Interior Design program at BCIT and I was really skeptical about being an interior designer and your videos are really inspiring! Seriously hope I get to work for you one day because your style of design is right up my alley! Love your videos, keep doing you!

I'm so impressed by your channel! I discovered you yesterday and after being suggested this video I decided to subscribe and turn on notifications! I loved how you talked about opportunities and how important it is to give them to people to people who you believe are creative and have talent. I'm fifteen and in high school and am super passionate about the interior design industry but I'm worried the part time design assistant jobs won't see past the fact that I am young despite the fact that I am experienced with CAD, Photoshop, etc. Anyways, your video made me feel happy because there's people out there who care about seeing the talent that people can have despite their age or any other label :).

I just came across your videos and fell in love with them. The videos and your work in general remind me again of how much I love interior design. Right now I am studying marketing and I hope that later I can find a job that in a way links them both, marketing and interior design ❤️ on the other hand I am contemplating to just begin an interior design degree, but you know I just turned 20 and I actually am not into that idea of studying ''forever''...

I really want to one day be able to have so many amazing people to work with and just laying out my creativity. I'm gonna wok hard to get to my goal! If anyone has any tips on the first steps I should take to reach my goal in the future it would really be amazing 😍❤️

So wild that I just stumbled upon this video! I’ve been to the virtuous pie in Vancouver that you designed and thought while i was there how beautifully designed the space was! I’m a designer myself based out of LA, keep up the good work! I’ve never seen content like this on YouTube for my career so this is extremely enticing. Thanks for making great content! @sarahsolinger

Thank you so much for these videos! I love how laid back you guys are! I’m currently taking time off from design school after having my daughter last fall. I hope to someday own my own studio. You have inspired me to stop worrying so much about “how much longer it is going to take” and Just go back and finish ❤️

When you have a market that is receptacle to ideas, and not just cost cost budget attached to stealing ideas, then the energy & zest for all such presentation keep driving you ahead. I have witnessed designers just throwing 3D Renders with couple of sketches without having a clue on execution and reasoning.

Would it be unwise to consider going into becoming a space planner - like from the ground up - back to school etc - at 33 years old?
Nokkha Wangsa (6 months ago)
It is better to consult an architect for "space planning". First the plan shall be approved by the client then followed by interior design. Being an architect for better understanding of the clients I do not directly present an autocad generated drawings. Lines and other technical details normally make clients confused. So I coloured activity spaces with different colours so that it can be seen and understood easily. Then I give a legend details on side.

I see you are doing a wonderful job by giving us an inside view of what it means to work in this wonderful field of Interior Design. I'm a student studying Diploma in Interior Design and can't wait to enter into the work force. I have actually done my masters in Business Management but my passion for design created a change of heart. I'm a 32 year old male. I noticed one thing is that not a lot of guys are involved with you. You do not seem to have male designers working with you and I'm very curious to know why. I have one last question and I hope I get the answer to it. What do you think one should do to land the entry level job in Interior Design without any professional experience or for people who are just starting. Thank you very much and please continue what you are doing. Wish you lots of success.
